This year's CALPHAD conference was particularly well attended, and was the first fully face-to-face meeting following the COVID-19 pandemic. The APDIC meeting immediately followed the final session of CALPHAD, and was a mixture of face-to-face and online participation. A regular part of the meeting is the presentation of the individual member reports, which can been seen on this website. It was particularly uplifting and sobering to hear the report from Ukraine, who are still very active despite their current difficulties.

The 50th CALPHAD conference was held at the 'Tang Centre' at MIT, in memory of Larry Kaufman, the founder of CALPHAD. The APDIC meeting immediately followed the conference and, as last year, was a hybrid event with roughly half of the delegates joining online. In addition to the usual APDIC discussions and reporting of activities, a presentation on present and future activities on phase diagrams being carried out in Spain was given by Prof Tomás Gómez-Acebo Temes.

Calphad XLIX was held as the first face-to-face Calphad meeting since the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020, and consequently, it was possible to hold the first face-to-face APDIC meeting for three years. It was, however, a hybrid event with just under two-thirds of the APDIC representatives joining online. It was particularly pleasing that the meeting was attended by two representatives from Ukraine; the first having fled to Germany and the second residing temporarily in the Ukrainian Capitol. The meeting was chaired by Ursula Kattner (APDIC chair) assisted by acting secretary, Rainer Schmid-Fetzer (standing in for Tim Chart who was indisposed). It was noted that three of the Member Representative Groups (of Japan, France and the UK) are undergoing/have undergone significant changes recently, which are documented in the individual member reports. Nevertheless, following a full agenda with lively discussion, APDIC looks forward to holding a full face-to-face meeting in 2023.

Owing to the the 2021 Calphad meeting being held online and the continued travel restrictions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 APDIC meeting was also conducted online. Organised by the APDIC secretary, Tim Chart, and chaired by the current chair of APDIC, Ursula Kattner of NIST, USA, the meeting was 'attended' by representatives from across the Globe, from California to Japan. Despite the time differences and the distances separating the attendees, it was 'business as usual' with a full meeting agenda. The meeting was a great success despite the technical challenges in organising and running such an event online.
